AMPLIFYING COLLECTIVE VOICE AND CONFIDENCE BUILDING FOR MIGRANT WOMEN

The Migrant Employment Support Club, which was created within the AMIF-funded CONSOLIDATE project, provides vital spaces that break isolation, build confidence, and foster long-term community integration.

The Club meetings held in October, brought together migrant entrepreneurs, employers, local citizens, migrant support organizations, and offered new opportunites for collaboration and initiatives tailored to the unique needs of immigrant and refugee women.

The third meeting held in the beginning of October in one of Sofia’s suburban areas, offered migrant families which have settled there an opportunity to meet with locals and to discuss everyday experiences, challenges of finding appropriate housing, local public services, access to education and cultural events.

The meeting at Community Cultural Center Druzhba emphasized the need to organize community events for socialization and exchange of cultural traditions and practices, to jointly build safer community spaces, enjoy shared celebrations, etc. Participants in the meeting enjoyed also a viewing of short documentaries about the history of Sofia and how street festivals can bring together multiple audiences, help create new friendships, partnerships, and support migrants in starting their new lives.

For the final fourth meeting of the club on 8 October, we partnered with Caritas Sofia and the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The international meeting hosted by the Bulgarian partners, was a great opportunity to present the Consolidate project, the Club’s results and activities, to reflect on the Club’s role for supporting the economic and employment integation of migrant women. Together with the international participants in the meeting, the social partners, integration experts, and migrants, the event offered valuable lessons learned about designing and deploying inclusive training and tailored support to help vulnerable populations transition into professional and business roles required for today’s labor market in Bulgaria.

The Migrant Empoloyment Club meetings, along with the dedicated trainings and sociocultural orientation programs under the Consolidate project, have proven as versatile and effective ways to support migrants in Sofia to not only start a professional career, but to build new relationships with neighbors and fellow citizens. A holistic support framework, which focuses on the family and personal well-being of the migrants, in addition to offering structured learning and professional venues, is key to successful integration and cohesive communities.

The results and impact achieved through the Consolidate project will help the city of Sofia design and offer integration programs that meet the specific needs of migrant populations while ensuring that such programs also create a renewed sense of solidarity and sharing among the city’s residents and guests.
