CO-CREATING INCLUSIVE SPACES FOR CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND EQUITABLE SOCIETAL TRANSFORMATIONS

BISI presents good practices for public engagement and citizen-led transformative visions for equitable futures

On 4 November 2025, ALDA (European Association for Local Democracy) organized a webinar focused on the objectives and implementation of foresight methodologies for citizen engagement within the CERV-funded CitizenForesight EU project. BISI was invited to present the project achievements and lessons learned from the implementation of forward-looking citizen dialogues and scenario-building workshops in Sofia.

From June 2024 through May 2025, BISI has organized three events which gathered over 120 people to discuss the future of democracy in Bulgaria and in the EU. In the run-up to the EUP elections in 2024, BISI brought together first-time voters to deliberate with politicians the priorities of European policymaking and local governance, helping political leaders understand better the needs of citizens and make better choices in the face of multiple societal challenges. The event was an opportunity for young people to imagine the future based on the present developments and to communicate their visions to the policymakers.

In 2025, BISI held two foresight workshops on the future of citizenship and civic rights. Guided by trained facilitators and using specially designed workbooks, the participants explored plausible futures to the evolution of civil society and civic activism, comparing visions and alternatives. The workshops helped the participants understand the dynamics of foresight exercises and how to transform ideas into workable solutions for achieving a desired future scenario.

Drawing on the experiences from the CitizenForesight EU project, BISI has designed and is currently leading projects on improving the health literacy of young people and older citizens, employing the methodologies of transformative futures learning and co-design.
